Description
In a forthright style, with anecdotes and political analysis, José Luis Merino offers an insight into the brutal civil war in El Salvador (1980–92) and how the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) transformed itself from a guerrilla movement into a major political force that achieved government in a remarkable electoral victory in 2009.
About the Author
José Luis Merino (nom de guerre, Ramiro Vázquez) began his political involvement early as a young activist in the labor movement. As one of the military leaders of the FMLN guerrilla force, he was a key figure during the 12-year civil war and one of the central figures of the FMLN. Following the 1992 peace accords, he played a crucial role in the FMLN's transition to becoming a major political party. He succeeded Jorge Schafik Handal as the leader of the Salvadoran Communist Party and was the architect of the FMLN's electoral victory in 2009. Today he is a deputy to the Central American Parliament.
