Description
The sixth edition of this classic text continues its popular interdisciplinary approach to the topic of leadership by examining fundamental elements of military leadership: the “process” of leadership, the dynamic personal interactions between leader and followers, and the individual and organizational values that foster effective military leadership. Military Leadership provides a thoroughly reconsidered and greatly expanded mix of classic and contemporary articles as well as original essays, with authors representing all of the services. Incisive introductory essays to each section highlight themes and connections. Eric B. Rosenbach joins the editorial team for this edition, helping infuse the text with fresh perspectives. The essays of the sixth edition confront the criticisms that surround military leadership today, offer international viewpoints, and relate military leadership to contemporary leadership theory and approaches.
Robert L. Taylor (Lt. Col., USAF, ret.) is Professor of Management and Dean Emeritus of the College of Business and Public Administration at the University of Louisville.
William E. Rosenbach (Col., USAF, ret.) is the retired Evans Professor of Eisenhower Leadership Studies at Gettysburg College.
Eric B. Rosenbach is Executive Director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard University.
Reviews:
“This latest compendium continues the impressive Taylor and Rosenbach tradition of demonstrating the critical importance of productive relationships between leaders and followers for producing excellence within the profession of arms. Having made the case for transformational leadership in earlier editions, the authors now demonstrate its relevance to the increasingly complex challenges of what has become the ‘long war.’ If you want to understand better how integrity, commitment and a quest for excellence have lead to a vastly improved counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq, read Military Leadership: In Pursuit of Excellence.”
—Lt. Gen. Ervin J. Rokke, USAF (Ret.); Superintendent’s Chairperson for Character and Leadership Development, United States Air Force Academy
“The past several years have demonstrated the important role that military leaders play in both ensuring our national security and upholding the American values enshrined in the Constitution. This book not only captures those salient contemporary issues, but also provides a thoughtful and rich foundation of readings for those looking to expand their understanding of military leadership.”
—Richard Clarke, Former Special Assistant to the President, National Coordinator for Security
“This book is an excellent resource for those looking to improve their understanding of military leadership and its importance to the challenges facing us today. Whether a seasoned military officer or public policy student, individuals who read this book will come away enriched.”
—Graham Allison, Belfer Center of Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School
Praise for previous editions:
This fifth edition provides another remarkable melding of theory and current practice. A unique, invaluable resource for both student and practitioner. This is one of the few books that should be on every leader's reading list.
— Walter F. Ulmer, Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (retired), and former President and CEO, Center for Creative Leadership
“In Military Leadership: In Pursuit of Excellence, 5th Edition, Rosenbach and Taylor have once again touched the very essence of transformation with a remarkable collection of essays. Though written with the military reader in mind, it carries equal value for civilians. A 'must read' for all leaders and followers who want to make a difference.
— Erv Rokke, President of Moravian College, Lt. General/USAF (retired)
The single best book of readings on leadership around-by far.
— Warren Bennis, University of Southern California
